Once a year is a reasonable minimum for most homes, ideally in autumn after most leaves have fallen. If you're under overhanging trees, or your gutters are prone to blocking with moss from the roof above, twice a year is safer.
What to Check For
- Overflowing during rain — usually means a blockage or a section that's lost its fall angle
- Sagging sections — often a sign a bracket has failed and needs replacing
- Water marks on the wall below a joint — points to a leaking seal that needs resealing or replacing
- Plants growing in the gutter — a clear sign it's been holding stagnant, blocked debris for a while
Why It Matters
Gutters are there to move water away from your walls and foundations. When they're blocked or damaged, that water ends up running straight down the brickwork instead, which over time can cause damp inside and even affect foundations in serious cases. It's a small job that prevents much bigger ones.
