A roof rarely fails all at once — it usually gives warning signs first. Catching these early can mean a straightforward repair instead of a much bigger (and pricier) job once winter weather sets in properly. Here's what we'd tell a customer to look out for.
1. Slipped or Missing Tiles
After a windy spell, take a look at your roof from the ground (or ask a neighbour with a good vantage point). Tiles that look out of line, cracked, or are missing altogether let water straight through to the roof felt underneath, which isn't designed to be a long-term barrier on its own.
2. Damp Patches or Staining on Ceilings
A brownish stain or damp patch on an upstairs ceiling is one of the clearest signs of a roof leak. Water can travel a surprising distance along rafters before it shows up inside, so the source isn't always directly above the stain.
3. Sagging Gutters or Overflowing in Rain
If you notice water pouring over the edge of a gutter during rain rather than draining through the downpipe, it's usually blocked or the bracket has failed. Left long enough, overflowing gutters can lead to damp at the base of your walls.
4. Daylight Visible in the Loft
If you've got loft access, a quick check on a bright day can reveal small gaps around chimneys, roof lights or ridge tiles that are easy to miss from outside.
5. Moss Build-Up on Tiles
A bit of moss isn't an emergency, but thick moss growth holds moisture against the tiles and can accelerate wear over time — worth having cleaned before it gets out of hand.
